(FR) How high do greater mouse-eared bat fly? The answer with the help of GPS tags!
This article is a summarized and popularized version of the results of the study on the flight altitude of greater mouse-eared bat using GPS tags (https://www.ecofirst.eu/fr/nos-publications/fr-etude-de-lutilisation-de-lespace-et-du-temps-par-le-grand-murin-par-gps-loggers-miniaturises-rapport-final).
A study carried out in Belgium (Walloon Region) in 2023 investigated the flight altitude of greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis). The study was carried out in the context of growing demand for the installation of wind turbines in forests. 24 lactating females from 2 breeding colonies were fitted with miniaturized GPS receivers. Of the 13 tags recovered, 9 were used to create a dataset for assessing the hunting grounds occupied and the flight altitudes of the individuals. Identification of hunting grounds, measurement of flight altitudes in both open and forested areas on hunting sites, and information on the types of stands used for hunting: these were the challenges of this fascinating study.
